Srikalahasti Temple
History and legend
Legend links the temple to the hunter-devotee Kannappa. Rajendra Chola I built the main structure in the 11th century, and later kings expanded it.
Krishnadevaraya added the 120-ft gopuram and the hundred-pillar hall in 1516. That gopuram collapsed in 2010 and was rebuilt in its original form in 2017.
What makes it unique
- It is the Vayu (wind) temple among the five Pancha Bhuta Shiva shrines.
- People call it the "Kailash of the South", and it is famous for Rahu–Ketu pooja.
- It is also said to stay open during eclipses.
