Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple
Kanipakam
History and legend
Legend says three brothers, unable to speak, hear or see, struck a stone while digging a well. Blood flowed from it, and they were cured. Villagers found a Ganesha idol there.
Chola emperor Kulottunga I built the temple in the early 11th century, and the Vijayanagara kings expanded it in 1336.
What makes it unique
- The idol is believed to be self-manifested and sits in a well that is always full of water.
- Devotees believe it is still growing: a silver covering made about 50 years ago no longer fits.
